Q&A with Candidate for CCSD Trustee Board, District E

How will your election to the State Board of Education/Clark County School District Trustee Board (depending on the office you are seeking) ensure African-American students' academic progress and graduation rates improve?

As a licensed special education teacher and a Ph.D. candidate in special education, I am equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based practices that have a proven track record of improving academic outcomes for African-American students. For example, I will advocate for the implementation of culturally responsive teaching methods that have been shown to increase engagement and achievement among minority students.

I am committed to a data-driven approach, using data to identify disparities, track progress, and make data-informed decisions. This includes holding the superintendent accountable for implementing strategies that lead to tangible improvements in academic progress and graduation rates for Black/African-American students.

What specific policies would you champion?

There is a need to review and update policies that serve the needs of our entire school system and broader community stakeholders. I would champion specific policies aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and equity within our school district. One key policy I would advocate for is the implementation of a comprehensive curriculum review process that ensures alignment with state standards, incorporates culturally relevant content, and utilizes evidence-based instructional practices. This policy would prioritize continuous improvement in teaching and learning, leading to better academic outcomes for all students.

Another policy area I would prioritize is student discipline and behavior management. I believe in implementing restorative justice practices that focus on resolving conflicts, repairing harm, and promoting positive behavior choices. This approach not only reduces disciplinary disparities but also fosters a sense of responsibility and accountability among students, contributing to a safer and more inclusive school climate.

I am committed to re-establishing the board's authority and ensuring informed oversight of school district operations. To achieve this, I would champion policies that strengthen the board's role in decision-making and accountability.

My goal is to support apprenticeship programs and invest in hard-working Nevadans and advocate for taxpayer dollars to stay in our state. By prioritizing these initiatives, we can empower our communities, foster economic growth, and create sustainable opportunities for all Nevadans.

How will you work to increase parental engagement in the education process?

I will implement a comprehensive approach to increase parental engagement in the education process, starting with improving the climate and culture within our school district. One of my key strategies will be to prioritize good customer service as a core value, ensuring that parents feel welcomed, valued, and respected. To achieve this, I will establish regular avenues for communication, such as hosting monthly conversations, creating a parent advisory council to gather feedback and input on important decisions, and organizing workshops and seminars on topics of interest to parents, such as navigating the education system or supporting their child's learning at home.
