Federal Funds Drive Investments in Our Local Non-Profits

The recent legislative session in Carson City proved to be very successful for our state, with advancements in children’s issues, election law, health care, higher education, K-12 education, LGBTQ rights, and for our tribal nations. One major area of success was in economic development, and in particular funds for non-profit and direct service government agencies.

SB341 and AB525 appropriated $110 million to 70 of these entities. The Culinary Academy, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, the Nevada Latino Bar Association, Chicanos Por La Causa, HELP of Southern Nevada, US VETS, Urban Chamber, The Arc, Vegas PBS, Community Health Alliance, the College of Southern Nevada, and the United Way are just a few of the organizations that received funding from this legislation.

I was proud to vote for the American Rescue Plan and other relief bills that have made these investments possible. The funds awarded by Nevada’s Interim Finance Committee originate from the efforts of House Democrats and the Biden Administration to investment in the communities that need it the most.

The American Rescue Plan was the start of Bidenomics, the belief that the best way to grow the U.S. economy is from the middle out and the bottom up. It has been a fundamental change in the nation’s approach in economics and counters the failed trickle-down economics theory that have been proven wrong time and time again.

With investments in our health care systems, our nation’s infrastructure, and green energy, we are seeing inflation cut in half and the economy has created 13 million jobs. Wage growth has begun to outpace inflation. Just last month, 209,000 jobs were created across the country, and unemployment was at 3.6%, marking 17 months in a row of staying under 4%. That is the longest stretch in over 50 years.

I will continue to support the policies that have gotten us here. We are making smart investments in our infrastructure, manufacturing, and clean energy. We have empowered American workers, increasing wages, educating, and training our work force, and supporting our unions. And we are promoting competition to lower costs and help small business, by fighting to ban non-compete agreements and creating a level playing field for our small businesses.
